Pentecost at the Fords of Jordan

Then they would say to him, "Say now, 'Shibboleth.' " But he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it correctly. - Judges 12.6

Today each tongue can say the shibboleth.
Un-babbled language once again unites.
On either side of Jordan one wild Breath
Breathes one wild Name that to one God invites.
This water not a border, but a ford,
This muddy bank too safe a place to die,
This word proclaimed a swifter-slaying sword,
This stream a font for living sacrifice.
Accent and intonation harmonize
The rich mosaic of His kingdom come.
In symphony, not sameness, come the cries
Of every world-wide nation, tribe, and tongue.
All welcome to the water on this day!
Speak Friend and enter: Word that all can say.
